Frequently Asked Questions

Who designs and makes Willowroot wands?

Every wand, pendant, statue and piece of jewelry at Willowroot Wands is the creation of California artist Abby Willowroot, who has been making original metaphysical jewelry since 1967 and magic wands since the early 1980s, when she showed them at the northern and southern California Renaissance Faires. The wands are cast and hand-polished by American craftsfolk in northern California, with careful craftsmanship, pride and positive energy. Kim Kelley is the owner of Willowroot Wands; she has been an integral part of it from the beginning, and all the stones and crystals are set by Kim.

What are Willowroot wands made of?

Willowroot wands are made of the finest 100% lead-free pewter, with 5% pure silver content for conductivity, strength and beauty. Some wands carry natural stones and crystals, some Austrian crystals and contemporary synthetic stones, and some both. All the stones are cleansed and smudged, and every wand is smudged with sage and blessed after it is created. Each wand is designed to last for many years of regular use, and comes with an instruction sheet on dedicating it and a few simple spells.

Are Willowroot wands real? Do they work?

Yes, but they do not have the powers seen in the Harry Potter books and films. Willowroot wands are designed for real spell working and meditation, carefully made to amplify and transmit your energy and your spells. They work very well, as thousands can attest; they don’t shoot sparks, levitate objects, fly, or turn your family members into toads, unless you have the powers to do that within you already. Real magic isn’t flash-bang-zoom. It is quieter, more subtle and harder to see coming, but it is amazing all the same.

How do I choose the wand that is right for me?

Trust yourself. Look at all the wands and see which ones attract you most, but don’t order yet: wait, come back in a day or two, and see whether the same wands still draw you. If they do, start deciding which one seems right. It isn’t the price or size that makes a wand right for you, it is the wand’s energy, so choose the wand you really love. The wand finder on the site can narrow the field with three questions.

Are large wands more powerful than small wands?

Not necessarily. The power of a wand depends a great deal on your connection to it; the wand that draws you is the one to choose, and the unique energy of each wand can be used very effectively by the person drawn to it. For ceremonial work in groups or covens, a larger wand is recommended.

Do I have to be a witch to have a magic wand?

No. All kinds of people buy Willowroot wands for all kinds of reasons. Some are witches or wizards who use them for spell casting. Some have always wanted a magic wand and keep it on a desk, coffee table or bookshelf, enjoying it daily and benefiting from the energy within it. Some use a wand as a focusing tool for meditation, or to teach others to meditate and focus; Reiki practitioners and other healers use them in their healing practice, psychics in their work, and some wands appear in theatrical productions, films and TV.

Will a magic wand give me powers?

A magic wand, any magic wand, will not give you powers you don’t have within you, but it will help you access and work with the powers that are within you, often powers you don’t even know you have. Using a wand helps you focus and open your spirit and mind to unlimited possibilities, and it can expand the power of your own visions and your ability to manifest the life and changes you want.

What should I do first with a new wand?

Before working with a new wand, fill it with your positive intentions and personal power. Sit quietly with it and meditate on what drew you to this particular wand; let your fingers flow over the detail and absorb the feel of it, noticing the textures and patterns. When the wand begins to feel familiar in your hands, dedicate and consecrate it: a small personal ritual with incense, candles, water and salt for the elements, and a mirror for the candlelight. The instruction sheet that comes with every Willowroot wand walks you through it, and the full dedication is on the “Dedicating your wand and a few spells” page.

How should I keep my wand when I am not using it?

Many people keep their wand wrapped in a cloth chosen for its materials, colours, pattern and energy, heavy enough to give the wand a snug place to nestle; the cloth is blessed as part of the wand’s dedication. Others keep the wand out where they can enjoy it daily, on a desk, altar or bookshelf, and Willowroot makes pewter wand stands for exactly that.

What is the return policy?

Returns are accepted within 10 days of receipt, with a return authorization: please call (510) 573-3459 or email before sending anything back, because no returns are accepted without authorization. As long as the wand is not damaged and is in “as new” condition, with its tube and instructions, your card is refunded in full when the return arrives. Any order may be cancelled before it ships, for a full refund to the payment method you used. Gift certificates returned for credit receive store credit only.

From the earliest human history, people have used special sticks and objects as power objects and as tools for contacting the spirit world; a magic wand is such an object.
