A pentagram is a five-pointed star. Four of the points represent the four material elements (earth, water, fire, air) while the fifth represents the spirit. When presented with a circle drawn around a pentagram (a pentacle) these elements are bound together and create life representing unity, wholeness, infinity, the goddess, and protection. To many contemporary pagans, the pentacle represents the feminine spirit, the spiritualism of Mother Earth, a sacred space.
A common belief is that if the pentacle has the fifth point facing up it represents the spiritual over the physical (good) while if the fifth point is facing down it represents the physical over the spiritual (evil) thus associating it with dark magic. And yet in Chinese five-element philosophy there is a natural balance between fire, water, earth, wood, and metal. Within this belief the direction it is pointing has nothing to do with good or evil, but rather the upside-down facing circle is for banishing evil. The circle is again for the concept the power within is bound by, this time for the circle of life.
